Mixed Media Drawing

22X30 Graphite, Charcoal, Gouache, Photo Collage.

This work of art is heavily rooted in memory for me, and what it means to grow with memories and how age can distort how we perceive old events You can see a few components of the collage from the first glance. There are cream pieces of paper, a dark background, a white and black component, and red squares.

The tan component of this piece is a self-portrait that I had drawn and later on as time passed by I came to the conclusion of cutting this self-portrait apart and integrating it within the collage. The black and white components of this artwork are photocopied images of myself as a child. I manipulated the photos by cutting out different forms of myself and making what seems to be abominations of who I am. The dark background was a layer of charcoal and text that isn’t legible, there is a poem that goes with this piece of work that is attached as an image here. This is written throughout the background, and if displayed in a gallery the poem would be accompanying the piece. The red squares hold value to me as a sign of memory with almost giving a layer that comes above the piece for dimensionality.
